ON A STORMY SPRING NIGHT, WYNNE MARKS SUFFERED FOR HOURS AS SHE LABORED TO BRING HER TWIN SON AND DAUGHTER INTO THE WORLD. SHE MIGHT NOT HAVE HAD ANY FAMILIAL SUPPORT THAT FATEFUL DAY, BUT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT COULD TRULY BREAK HER WILLFUL SPIRIT. HER TWO CHILDREN WOULD BE HER WAY UP IN THE WORLD AFTER FAILING TO SOCIAL CLIMB AT THE LIKES OF MIT. SURE, SHE HAD HER WAY INTO THE ELITE INSTITUTION, HAD MANAGED TO EVEN CHARM A BRIGHT GRADUATE ON HIS WAY TO GREAT AND SURELY LUCRATIVE THINGS, BUT IT WAS HARD TO EXCEL IN A PLACE YOU HAD NO INTEREST IN, REALLY. SO BACK HOME SHE WENT, GIVING BIRTH TO MARINA AND PATRICK KAISER ON APRIL 10, 1996. THE NEW MOTHER TRULY HAD NO IDEA WHAT SHE WAS GETTING HERSELF INTO. MARINA WAS A DOLL, QUIET YET STORMY IN HER MOODS LIKE THE NIGHT SHE WAS BORN. PATRICK, WHILE BRIGHT AND CHERUBIC, HAD EVEN WORSE MOMENTS. HE WAS A TEMPESTUOUS CHILD, ALWAYS ON THE MOVE, AND WHEN HE CRIED AND HAD FITS, IT WAS FOR HOURS. WYNNE WAS NEVER EQUIPPED TO MOTHER APPROPRIATELY AND WOULD BLAME IT ON THE LEGACY OF HER OWN ROCKY CHILDHOOD. ONE CHILD WAS ENOUGH OF A BURDEN; SHE ONLY NEEDED ONE GOOD MEAL TICKET ANYWAY. PATRICK AND MARINA WOULD EVENTUALLY BE SPLIT UP, BUT WYNNE WAS CONVINCED THE TWO WOULDN’T REMEMBER ONE ANOTHER ANYWAY. PATRICK WOULD FIND A LOVING HOME WITH PARENTS WHO SO DESPERATELY WANTED A CHILD, AND MARINA WOULD REMAIN WITH WYNNE. MARINA WOULD FIRST MEET A MAN NAMED MARCUS KAISER WHEN SHE WAS THREE. THE MEETING HAD OCCURRED IN BOSTON, AND WHILE IT WAS QUICK AND SURELY NOT THE PICTURESQUE REUNION WYNNE HAD WANTED, ALL THE TESTS, APPOINTMENTS WITH LAWYERS AND EVENTUAL COURT HEARINGS SETTLING CHILD SUPPORT AND CUSTODY WOULD SORT OUT THE MESS THAT WYNNE HAD MADE. THE YOUNG GIRL WOULD SPEND SUMMERS WITH HER PROVEN BIOLOGICIAL FATHER, MARCUS KAISER AND WOULD REMAIN WITH HER MOTHER IN PHILADELPHIA FOR THE REST OF THE CALENDAR YEAR. MARCUS ALSO FOUGHT TO MAKE CERTAIN HE SECURED HOLIDAYS WITH MARINA FOR THE NEXT THREE YEARS TO OFFSET THE TIME HE HAD ALREADY MISSED. MARINA PROVED TO BE QUITE THE INQUISITIVE AND BRIGHT CHILD AT A YOUNG AGE, BUT AS SHE GREW OLDER, THAT LIGHT AND SPARK WITHIN HER WOULD GROW DIM AS SHE STRUGGLED WITH BOUTS OF DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY. HER MOTHER’S REMEDY FOR SUCH ISSUES WAS PRESCRIPTION PILLS AND BOARDING SCHOOL IN POTTSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, WHICH WAS ONLY A 40 MINUTE RIDE FROM HER HOME IN PHILADELPHIA. THE HILL SCHOOL WAS A PLACE FOR HEIRS, LEGACIES AND MILLIONAIRE MOGULS IN THE MAKING, AND WHILE BY NAME MARINA DID INDEED FIT IN, SHE HATED EVERY YEAR SPENT AT THE PLACE. IN ORDER TO AVOID HER MOTHER’S WRATH, MARINA ASSIMILATED AS BEST AS SHE COULD. SHE WAS A STAR IN FIELD HOCKEY AND HAD KEPT COMPETITIVE ENOUGH IN HER GPA THAT IVY LEAGUES WERE ALL BUT A GUARANTEE. IN HER LAST YEARS OF BEING IN SCHOOL, MARINA RELISHED FOR SUMMER AND TIME SPENT AWAY FROM HER MOTHER. AFTER QUIET CONSIDERATION, SHE DECIDED TO ATTEND HARVARD UNIVERSITY TO BE CLOSER TO HER FATHER. TRANSITIONING FROM THE HILL SCHOOL TO A PLACE LIKE HARVARD WASN’T DIFFICULT IN THE LEAST. AS ALWAYS, MARINA KNEW HOW TO ASSIMILATE AND KEEP HER HEAD DOWN AND FOCUS ON HER STUDIES. SHE HAD A ROUTINE THAT WORKED, BUT THE PRESSURE THAT CAME WITH BEING A HARVARD LEGACY AND A KAISER PROVED TOO MUCH FOR THE ENGINEER MAJOR. MARINA TOOK A FULL SEMESTER OFF TO COPE WITH A SEVERE BOUT OF DEPRESSION AND WAS FORCED TO DEAL WITH HER MENTAL ILLNESS HEAD ON AS SHE CYCLED THROUGH PSYCHOLOGISTS AND PSYCHIATRISTS. WITH THE SUPPORT OF HER FAMILY, MARINA GOT THROUGH IT. WYNNE MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN THERE TO HOLD MARINA’S HAND THROUGH THAT DIFFICULT TIME AS A MOTHER SHOULD, BUT MARCUS WAS THERE. IN ORDER TO MAKE CERTAIN HER RECOVERY WAS SUCCESSFUL, MARINA MOVED IN WITH HER FATHER WHO HAD OPENED HIS DOORS AND GAVE HER ALL THE RESOURCES TO GET THROUGH HER DEPRESSION. CURRENTLY, MARINA IS FINISHING UP HER LAST TWO SEMESTERS AT HARVARD AND IS DUE TO GRADUATE IN AUGUST 2018. WHILE A POSITION IN HER FATHER’S COMPANY IS AN APPEALING CHALLENGE, MARINA HAS PLANS TO CONTINUE HER STUDIES AND PURSUE A MASTER’S IN ENGINEERING. | ||||
